32. 丰富多彩的课外阅读
学校的暑假一般从5月下旬开始，到8月初才开学，时间达70多天。少数考试不及格的学生在假期中参加半个月左右的暑期学校（Summer School），复习功课，重新考试，以便下学期顺利升入高一个年级。
假期既是同学们外出旅游的时间，也是大量阅读课外读物的时间。快要放暑假的时候，学校就在网站上发布帖子，公布各个年级暑假阅读的书单。各个年级阅读书目达几十本之多，涉及范围广泛，有各类文学作品、人物传记、历史小说，也有科普作品和励志读物，这些书往往是经典的或当时很流行的。学校要求在读完后，学生要写读书报告（Book Report），上学后在课堂上交流（Oral Presentation）。
学生在假期阅读的一个好地方是社区图书馆。一到假期，社区图书馆几乎成为学生们的天堂。学生可以到社区图书馆借阅图书，拿回家阅读。如果某一种书图书馆里没有收藏，读者可以在图书馆留下书目，叫图书馆去采购，往往几天后书就到了，图书馆通知你去借阅。社区图书馆还经常搞中小学生读书竞赛，看谁读的书多，读得细。
大量的课外阅读，使学生们在学校就形成了阅读的习惯。我们常常看到，在地铁站，地铁车厢，飞机上，许多人手上拿着书在阅读。
