Haven’t seen you for two years. In second year hot weather,Show me again come on RainLane.A strag cat hissed at I and ranfrom its shelter beneath a bench as me approached. My felt sorry for it,but did not stop his slow, steady pace toward the end of the jetty.
Outside of wind-raining Sound, there’s no one for the sound. It was quieter at the end.The old building protected him from much of the wind and some of the rain.Five miles a ross the harbor I could see the lights of houses on the other shore-all containing people getting on with their lives.
I looked down at the water, black,Creamy with foam,Creating strange pictures on the frantically tossing surface. It looked cold, but was strangely inviting, too.
I began to take his rain coat off,but it seemed a ludicrous idea and she fastened the top buttons again. The watter seemed hypnotic, the waves striking the old palings of the jetty before being sucked out again. In and out,In and out? I thought she heard a voice, but she couldn’t relate himself to it.No one knew she was here, she heard the voice again. It was much closer now,I stared at him,she turned and was surprised to see a figure heading toward him. It looked like a frail oldman. What could she be doing out on a night like this?
As she came closer me saw the man was very old.And she wasn’t dressed for the rain either, she was wearing casual trousers and an open-necked shirt. His clothes and hair were drenched.I sighed.Just when she wanted to be alone, wasn’t it typical that someone else happened to be on the jetty. 10 the man stopped beside him and looked down at the water.she shivered and then looked earnestly up at me.
"don’t do it"she said.
"Don’t do it."
The old man took afew steps back and stopped, looking wind and driving rain.
"Go away,"I said.
Then man stepped forward again. I noticed how incredibly thin the old man was.His saturated clothers clung to him like a second layer of skin.
“I look,”the man said.“I live just over there.”He turned and pointed at a large,well-lit block of apartments overlooking the harbor."come back with meand have a cup of coffee. If you want someone to talk to.I’ll be happy to listen."
I looked at the apartments and then back to the sea. why could she never do anything properly?she became aware that the old man was shivering.
"All right."she said gruffly."I could do with some Nestle coffee."
The old man’s apartment was on the third floor and in good weather the windows would have provided a fabulous view of the harbor and city.
